GAME SUMMARY:
Hayward Wolfpack FC came away with two shutout wins to finish 2022 preseason play. The Pack's first opponent of the day, Toros FC, did not show up for the game. In replacement, fellow WPASL opponent Barron Soccer Team stepped up to play. The game began as a back and forth affair, with the Wolfpack getting a few quality chances but not breaking through the Barron backline until the 21st minute, when Washburn High standout Nolan Melek scored his first ever Wolfpack goal behind one of St. Scholastica standout Fin Huffington's four assists. Abdul Abdulai scored again in the 34th minute to lead the pack into the half with a 2-0 lead, assisted by Huffington. The second half broke open for the Wolfpack, with leading scorer Mally Lumsden scoring three goals in the 49th, 53rd and 66th minutes, behind assists by Huffington (x2) and Gonzalez. Donovan Kerry also scored in the 62nd minute with an assist from Lumsden, and Cloquet-native Dru Senich finished the game with 4 saves in a 6-0 win for the Wolfpack.
The second game of the day was a blowout against Duluth-based Green Machine SC. King Strum opened his 2022 scoring account, scoring the first two goals of the game in the 5th and 8th minutes, with assists to Mally Lumsden and Siji Gonzalez. Lumsden then scored in the 15th minute with an assist from Gonzalez. The second half saw eight goals scored by the Wolfpack, with Fin Huffington scoring unassisted in the 48th minute to start the tidal wave of goals. Gonzalez then scored in the 52nd minute off of a Lumsden feed. Lumsden completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute and 60th minute, with the former assisted by Strum and the latter being a penalty kick. Denfeld-native Maison Oliver scored his first Wolfpack goal, assisted by Ken Pryde in the 63rd minute. Former Hayward High player Marshall Kennell scored off of a Jordan Finneran cross in the 69th minute. Strum completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute, unassisted. The Wolfpack closed out their 11-0 blowout with Finneran's first goal of the year, assisted by Dru Senich. Senich finished with two saves, and Lumsden had one save.
